Best air conditioning brands in the UK: what to actually compare

Search for “best air conditioning brand” and you’ll find a lot of confident rankings from sites that sell one particular brand. We’d rather explain what actually separates them, since the honest answer is that several major brands are excellent, and the right choice depends more on your installer’s experience with a given range than a universal “best”.

The major brands you’ll encounter

Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, LG, Samsung, Panasonic, Toshiba and Fujitsu all manufacture residential air conditioning sold widely in the UK. All are large, established manufacturers with decades in the climate control market, and all make units that perform well when correctly sized and installed. Differences between them show up more in specific model ranges than in brand-wide quality.

What’s actually worth comparing

• Efficiency rating. Look for the SEER (cooling) and SCOP (heating) ratings on a specific model: these tell you real efficiency, unlike a brand name alone.
• Noise level, in decibels. Indoor unit noise typically ranges from around 19dB to the high 20s on the lowest fan setting for good residential units, worth checking for a bedroom in particular, where a noisy indoor unit is far more noticeable than in a lounge.
• Refrigerant type. Most modern systems use R32, a refrigerant with a lower environmental impact than the R410A it replaced. If a quoted system still uses R410A, ask why.
• Warranty length and what it actually covers. Manufacturer warranties on parts commonly run 3–5 years, but installer warranties on the workmanship itself vary far more, and a manufacturer warranty is often void if annual servicing isn’t kept up.
• Local parts and service availability. A less common brand can leave you waiting longer for a specific part if something needs repairing. The mainstream brands above are all well stocked by UK wholesalers.
